The Central Subway Project continues to upgrade the sewer and utilities along the alignment. These improvements are part of the infrastructure of this new transportation extension. Heavy excavation equipment performs work a large utility trench at Freelon and 4th, where dual sewer lines are being installed.

Workers lower equipment into an excavated trench at 4th and Freelon, where two sewer lines are being installed.

A repaved section of 4th Street just south of Freelon serves as a temporary detour for vehicles accessing Freelon Alley.

At the corner of 4th and Folsom, we are constructing the future Yerba Buena/Moscone Station. Excavation of the entrance structure, called the headhouse, has reached the platform level of the station.

The station’s mezzanine level and platform are located under 4th Street between Folsom and Howard. Here, workers finish construction of the mezzanine level’s floor slab.

On the surface near 4th and Howard, workers are excavating and reinforcing a trench to install new utilities.

This week’s photos feature above and below ground images at the Union Square|Market Street Station. Here, a backhoe fitted with a jackhammer breaks up pieces of concrete during excavation of the station box.

Below, sparks fly as a worker uses an angle grinder to smooth edges of a steel bracket inside the north concourse, where temporary steel reinforcing is being installed.

An underground view of the southeast corner of the Union Square Garage where construction of the north station entrance is ongoing.

Above ground, passersby can see newly-installed ventilation fans and ductwork on the east side of the Chinatown Station site.

Underground, work to begin excavation of the initial portion of the station cavern has begun.

Up close, two men in a hi-lift basket work toward the top of the right side of the cavern , where steel reinforcing is being installed.

Work along 4th Street in the SoMa district includes lots of infrastructure preparation. Here, sections of pipe are unloaded from a truck north of Townsend and stacked for installation.

New foundations for overhead wires are being installed along the surface portion of the alignment from Townsend to Bryant.

Utility installation and upgrade work continues at the intersection of 4th and Townsend.

Construction is in full swing both above ground and below on Stockton between Maiden Lane and Ellis Street. In this photo, concrete for a new curb has been poured at the northeast corner of Stockton and Geary streets.

Waterproofing vinyl and a slab of concrete now cover a new section of roof deck on the north side of the O’Farrell and Stockton intersection.

Underground, workers drill inside the station box between Geary and O’Farrell streets.

This week’s photos feature shots of scaffolding erected around the future Chinatown Station cavern entrance archway, where jet grouting and drilling operations are taking place.

A worker climbs a scaffolding ladder at the northwest corner of the headhouse, that’s a fancy word for station entrance, where work is underway.

A construction crew member reaches the bottom of the headhouse scaffolding, as a bulldozer continues excavation work nearby.
